March 23 - Trapped in Sin?

Monday of the Fifth Week of Lent

Today's Readings:
Today's Reflection

The readings today deal with conspiracies to use the law for evil purposes.  They also reveal courage and creativity which counteract these purposes.  In the first reading, Susannah rejects the perverted advances of two elders of the people who then lie that she has sinned; she is led off to execution.  In the Gospel, the scribes and Pharisees bring to Jesus a woman ‘caught in the very act’ and challenge him to pronounce on this issue in light of the Mosaic Law.   Both stories move quickly to focus, not on the women, but on the perpetrators:  Daniel uncovers the lies and reveals the treachery of the old men.  Jesus shows us how strict interpretation of the law can make us blind to our own sins and to the plight of the marginalized.  I pray for insight into my blind areas so that I might show more compassion and forgiveness in my life.
