Monday of the Second Week of Lent

Today's Readings

Today's Reflection

Jeremiah 31:34 looks toward a happier time in the future—a time without teaching! God says, “I shall plant my Law” within the House of Israel, “writing it on their hearts,” and “no longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, ‘Know the Lord!’”

That glorious day of no more pencils and no more books has not yet arrived; it seems there still is a need for us to teach one another about God. Two much-used pieces of Scripture make a point of it: Psalm 51:13, “I will teach the wicked your ways, that sinners may return to you,” and Luke 1:76-77, “You [the newborn John the Baptist] will be called prophet of the Most High, for you will . . . give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins.”

Late in life, I’ve come to realize how the teaching mentioned in these two passages is supposed to happen. The greatest thing we can teach others is that God is gracious and merciful. And the best way to do that is not by telling them “Know the Lord!” but by showing them—by being forgiving people ourselves. “Forgive and you will be forgiven!”
Paul S.
