Solemnity of Joseph
Today's Readings:
- 2 Samuel 7.4-5a, 12-14a, 16
- Psalm 89
- Romans 4.13, 16-18, 22
- Matthew 1.16, 18-21, 24a or Luke 2.41-51a
In the Gospel for this Solemnity, Joseph wrestles between “the law” – a tool of judgment and “his heart” – his unwillingness to expose Mary to shame. The Lord tells him in a dream “do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home…” How often do we wrestle with the ‘letter of the law”, often finding it the ‘safest’ way to respond? Lord, help me to develop a discerning and trusting heart like that of St. Joseph so that I may respond to my family, neighbors, and the marginalized with compassion.
