March 17 - Precious Water

Tuesday of the Fourth Week of Lent

Today's Readings
Today's Reflection

Today's readings talk about water, which is necessary for life and also plays an important role in our religious practices.  Yet, are we good stewards of our fresh water?  We use 2-8 million gallons to frack a well for gas; through mountain-top removal, we have buried 2,000+ miles of Appalachian headwaters streams to get more coal; we use 3-7 gallons just to flush a toilet (or 1.6 gallons with low-flow toilets); our pollution makes water temporarily or permanently undrinkable...  Perhaps if we lived in a desert climate like Ezekiel and Jesus, we would have more reverence for this amazing blessing that God has given us, and would not take it for granted.  How would things change if we treated fresh water as the vital and precious resource it is?
